Printed Fireworks
French duo Pinaffo-Pluvinage created Affiches Artifices, a series of posters to be ignited. Each poster is a little spectacle printed on paper, combining several pyrotechnic powders. Compositions of lines, grids and geometrical shapes animate with flame and burst by igniting the pyrotechnic powder on the figures. “We designed the graphics both for their aesthetic value and the animation it will then produce.” Marion Pinaffo and Raphaël Pluvinage told Archipanic. Studio Lenmarts & De Bruijn and overdeschreef were awarded for their graphic design project ‘Stay Sane, Stay Safe’ launched at the beginning of the pandemic. The designers invited over 87 designers from all over the world to create graphic designs with encouraging messages. The free-to-download and print creative works aimed to bring a positive message to people staying at home during the lockdown. Read more…
Harry Potter’s architectural book covers
Michele De Lucchi has reimagined Hogwarts, the Azkaban Prison, and other imaginary buildings in the Harry Potter saga with archetypical architectures. The architecture depicted for the book covers published by Italian publisher Salani drew on the design imagery of the Studio and, in particular, on those buildings that have symbolic connections with the series’ locations. BBC Tokyo Olympics’ trail
LET’S GO, BBC Tokyo Olympics trail by Nexus Studios and Factory Fifteen pays homage to the Japanese capital blending pop culture with sport. The video begins in an alley of the Akihabara manga district before plunging viewers into a TV screen where sport matches are reinterpreted with the language of Japanese anime and video games battles. In the trail, Tokyo has been taken over by the Olympics with street signs, shops, a Gashapon parlour, a sports fanatics’ bedroom and a J-Pop music video. Read more…
Elena Salmistraro x Cappellini
Italian designer and illustrator Elena Salmistraro teamed up with Cooperativa Alice, which employs marginalised women with the motto “behind every object there is a human” to create the AXO IN FABULA installation and graphic display investigating the theme of socio-cultural regeneration in Cappellini. Axolotl is a sweet and quirky salamander able to regenerate itself. From here, she filled the company’s Milanese showroom with grandma rag dolls reusing, re-assembling and regenerating pieces of fabric, giving life to unique pieces. Read more…
Chicago urban regeneration through graphic art-chitecture
Chicago residents transformed a vacant urban patch through a community workshop organized by Open Architecture Chicago, Freedom House, and Outpost Office. Together they created an architectural-scale urban painting by using GPS-guided robots. The project is part of the Chicago Architecture Biennial bringing forward collaborations between architects and creatives with residents in the name of urban regeneration. Read more…
Inclusive Pride flags
On the occasion of Pride Month, we explored the graphic design and history of 9 Pride flags celebrating the open-minded, fluid and inclusive diversity of the lesbian, gay, bisexual, transexual – LGBT – community and beyond. It all began with the rainbow flag, designed by artist and activist Gilbert Baker, inspired by Judy Garland’s Over the Rainbow, each color has symbolism. Read more…
