Graphic design – The visual and sound effects are physically programmed on paper, directly depending on the length and path of gunpowder. “We designed the graphics both for their aesthetic value and the animation it will then produce.” Said Raphaël Pluvinage and Marion Pinaffo, founders of the French studio Pinaffo-Pluvinage.

As ‘pyrotechnic ink’ doesn’t exist as such, the designers spent a lot of time in their workshop looking for the right way of mixing and printing such chemicals. “After hundreds of failed attempts, we finally found the right way.” Eventually, they selected five effects – yellow, red, and blue slow flame, sparkling flash, and rapid flame – that became the palette to design with.

The result is a series of 50 x 70cm posters featuring compositions of lines, grids and geometrical shapes. The poster animates with flame and bursts by igniting the pyrotechnic powder on the figures.
