Milan 2016 – Poltrona Frau presents new collections by Shanghai-based studio Neri&Hu that got inspired by Chinese ideograms and a linear and leather-crafted armchair by young designer Shi Chieh Lu who won an Italian-Taiwanese design competition.
“East and West. Shi Chieh Lu’s project goes straight to the core of two worlds, two visions, two philosophies of life and living” say at Poltrona Frau. Inspired by the historic Ming chair, the new Ming’s Heart armchair’s profile is made from tubular steel, the key material of Western rationalism and the industrial revolution. The upholstered minimal shell with visible hand-stitching is skillfully crafted by Italian leather masters.
“The new armchair stands out for purity of its lines merging Oriental spirituality with the no-frills geometric and cubic formality of Western style” explains Shi-Chieh Lu. The Taiwan based architect and designer translated different cultural apporaches into a seating that floats in space, almost like a futuristic swing or a conceptual sculpture.
Shi-Chieh Lu won the prestigious Taiwan Design Contest promoted by Poltrona Frau and Euchain Ltd., a long-established Taiwanese dealer. This contest aims to encourage cultural exchange between East and West.
