Design. From global events to international fairs, the design calendar is full of exciting opportunities for professionals to shake hands and spark collaborations. But with the 5th edition of Courmayeur Design Week End, Paola Coronel believes she has honed a new format where architects, designers, and brands can genuinely bond, strengthen their partnerships, and get inspired.
“The Design Week End format is a high-profile summit. A chance for companies and architects to meet up. All within a small environment, designed to boost those interpersonal relationships often hard to develop during bigger events.” Paola Coronel told Archipanic.
The weekend format provides an effective way to compress a series of events and initiatives into a few days, including leisure activities like culture, sports competitions, and sightseeing.
The Design Weekend takes place in prominent tourist hotspots throughout Italy, leveraging the country’s rich architectural heritage at each location. Following Courmayeur in the Italian Alps, events will proceed to Ostuni in Apulia in June and Pietrasanta in Tuscany in September. In every city, both local and national studios collaborate to design unique installations tailored to the specific site.
In Courmayeur, Giulio Cappellini and Giulio Iacchetti created an all-white site-specific installation at Courmayeur at the city’s Sport Center. “White not only as a reference to snow,” explained Cappellini. “White is also the colour all objects are born with when they are just digital visualisations” Within the same building, architects engaged in a curling tournament.
Visitors could explore the Alpine city centre to discover an open-air showcase featuring designer sledges. At the historic Caffé della Posta, Giulio Iacchetti and Cino Zucchi showcased iconic designer mokas. Inside the Chiesa Valdese, Mario Trimarchi created a multisensorial path within a pitch-black environment.
The experience was completed by a mesmerising ascent to Sky Way, a futuristic view station at 3.500 metres above sea level overlooking the wilderness of Mont Blanc. Here, furniture company Kartell set up an installation overlooking a sea of clouds.
At the Courmayeur Congress Centre, an inspirational programme of featured keynotes and talks by Cino Zucchi of CZA Architects with Giulio Iacchettti, Mario Trimarchi, Giulio Cappellini, and more.
Design Week End is an innovative format celebrating not only Italy’s rich architecture and nature but also the country’s unique approach to culture and vibrant conviviality. We look forward to the upcoming editions.
