Design. At Stockholm Furniture Fair 2025, Swedish furniture company Blå Station questioned the boundaries of intellectual property and creative ownership with the P.Y.R. – short for Protect Your Rights – chair by David Ericsson. “Could a great idea, turned into a simple product – obvious and easy to copy – still be protected by Intellectual Property laws – or should we just surrender and give it all away?

Design and product development are not what you see because you only see the result of a long and costly process. A design process requires an enormous amount of patience and an incredible amount of knowledge.” Says Johan Lindau, CEO and Design Manager of Blå Station.

But we live in an era where imitation thrives and price dictates value. Companies invest in professionals—engineers and designers—to develop better, smarter, and more sustainable designs, only to see their projects replicated at a cheaper price.

In the long term, the idea that cheaper equals better is detrimental for the design industry. “Protecting the original is not just about design. It’s about respect for ideas, sustainability, and the future we want to create together.”

Behind every designed product is a story: months or years of work, big investments and the desire to create something unique. It is this story that distinguishes the original from the copy. And that is why we must protect it.”

The P.Y.R. chair features intersecting planes and cantilevered elements. Its raw materiality aims to balance between stability and sculptural form. Made from sustainably sourced EU wood and available in multiple colors, P.Y.R.’s wide stance and intersecting beams provide a solid foundation. A subtle tilt of the seat adds an unexpected sense of comfort to its rigid geometry.

Should innovative simplicity be considered ‘free-for-all’, or could it be just as valuable and worth protecting as the complicated? P.Y.R is more than just a product – it’s a movement. A reminder that the simple can be the strongest.
