Miami 2019 – Maestro DOBEL® tequila has unveiled a limited-edition, three-piece collection of barware by Julian Mayor at Art Basel Miami Beach. The British artist has applied his industrial design and technical talents to pay homage to the traditions of tequila making.
The limited-edition set includes a spikey agave-inspired bar – the largest free-standing piece the artist has ever created – hand-welded prismatic steel cups and tasting glasses, which Mayor designed and commissioned Mexican glass artisans Vissio to realise.
The artist was inspired overall by an immersion in the world of DOBEL and journey to Mexico City, where he was struck by the juxtaposition of long-standing tradition and recent modernisation that is at the heart of Mexico’s capital.
From here, Mayor wanted all pieces to have elements of digital technology: they were designed using a computer, but the welding and glass-blowing were carried out by hand, giving each piece a distinct, unique character. “I was very inspired by the brand’s aesthetic, use of colour, lines, reflection – and particularly by the agave plant itself,” explains the artist.
Often inspired by nature, Julian Mayor fuses technology, industrial design and craft. His sculptural works have been shown at the V&A, Rossana Orlandi and galleries worldwide.
Maestro DOBEL® lives by the mantra You’ve got to master the rules before you can break them – a belief system informed by 11 generations of tequila expertise, artistry and innovation.
