“The collection was inspired by a plastic replica of Pedro Friedeberg’s iconic hand chair I bought near home,” explains Crosby Studios Founder and Principal Designer Harry Nuriev. “The series embodies an anatomical theme with playful, cartoon-like figurative abstraction and appendage-like constructions.”
Heavily influenced by Milanese luminaries from the Radical Design movement, Nuriev’s flirtatious ultraviolet series aggrandizes its own functionality through Surrealist abstraction and formal delicacy.
The ultraviolet and ‘handful’ collection features a furry chair, stools and a seat shaped like an open palm. For his Opening Ceremony collection, Nuriev deepens his practice of radically disrupting historical designs, creating a playful interpretation of Serge Mouille’s classic spider lamps, equipped with leaf-like lampshades in the form of hands.
Known for his ability to create objects that break free from gravity, Nuriev has designed a new edition of his signature Libraries, a series of freestanding cage-like shelves that are like a weightless cloister of elongated temples.
The series marks Nuriev’s first foray into ceramics and clothing design, both micro-collections unified through the application of expressive pastel brushstrokes. The collection is completed with a rug resembling paint spilled on the floor.
Russian-American designer Harry Nuriev founded Crosby Studios, an interior architecture and furniture design firm launched in Moscow and subsequently in New York.
Fashion brand Opening Ceremony was founded by Carol Lim and Humberto Leon and creates ready-to-wear, accessories and footwear collections for men and women.
