Interiors – Buenos Aires based hitzig militello arquitectos used local wood, white tiles and custom lighting-designs made with growler beer bottles for The Birra, a narrow pub in Ushuaia, the southernmost city in the world: the Tierra del Fuego at the end of Patagonia.

Ushuaia is the closest city to Antarctica. “Its architecture is the one typical of a port city but it appears to have stayed in time. Indeed, the isolated location and the weather have been implying a very rational use of materials, which are mostly wood and steel sheet.” Say Fernando Hitzig and Leonardo Guido Militello to Archipanic.

The project makes use of authentic Lenga wood from Patagonia and was inspired by the city’s ramos generales, traditional storehouses and meeting points for natives, gold diggers and explorers at the end of the world.

Located on a slope leading to Ushuaia bay, The Birra brewery and hamburger shop invites beer lovers in a narrow two-storey building (90m x 2.75m). The facade and interior design bring together wood and white tiles to balance the palette of materials so that the street-look and space does not rely solely on wood.

The ground floor works as a self-service and take out area. Stacked wooden boxes span on a side and onto the ceiling while a floor-to-ceiling blackboard can be used to narrate and promote the products. On the upper floor, low tables and bars are disposed along the walls with a more living area on the back.

We also created custom-designed elements responding to the concept of beer bar such as, lighting artifacts made out of transformed glass-growlers or wooden boxes applied to walls and ceilings as shelving for products on sale.” Say at hitzig militello arquitectos to Archipanic.
