The pavilion’s façade and structure are entirely handcrafted in rattan and natural fibres. “Woven is a metaphor for our tightly interlaced community, creativity, and unity, not only in a literal sense,” Juan Carlo Calma told Archipanic.

The pavilion’s design reflects the sturdy structure of warp and weft, the core components of weaving. Built using more than a thousand woven rattan pieces, it demonstrates the scalability of weaving by moving beyond conventional furniture sizes to reveal its capabilities on an architectural scale. Symbolic threads adorn the architecture with a gesture of ongoing progress expressed through extending terminations, giving the illusion of continuous movement.

The pavilion “celebrates Filipino care, skill, and creativity, showing how handicrafts remain powerful in the digital world.” As a tribute to the country’s indigenous culture, over 200 woven textiles provide “a vibrant touch of colour to natural-hued façade. Each is encapsulated within a weather-sealed assembly, allowing it to sway with the wind, and symbolising our long history of resilience.” The textiles nod to the ongoing progress and giving the illusion of perpetual motion.

Inside the pavilion, Juan Carlo Calma teamed up with Tellart, a design studio that created an immersive journey rooted in the country’s nature, culture, and community, woven together for a better future. Among the highlights is a crafts exhibition narrating the art of master weavers through tapestry.

At night, the pavilion comes to life as a handcrafted glowing lantern, inviting people to discover the Philippines’ commitment to a better future woven together.
