Design. “I consider myself a craftsman or a design artist, perhaps a function sculptor, definitely a material geek.” Confesses David Taylor. In Stockholm, he joined forces with Bukowskis auction house to present SPECIAL EFFECTS, an exhibition and online auction featuring 25 exclusive pieces that explore the potential of aluminium, focusing on craft and ornamentation..

The collection comprises recent furniture and lighting designs that mark a shift in scale and stand out for a distinct architectural character. “The focus is on objects that relate more to the human body. They are used by the whole body, rather than just the eye or the hand.”

FLOOR CLOCK “has a certain similarity to the classical grandfather clock, but I have taken another path.” The large sculptural piece doubles as a side table, combining functionality with a bold presence. The BENT BENCH“is simple but powerful in its form. It bears traces of my experimental process and clearly shows how aluminium properties define the object’s aesthetics.”

For the BAR cabinet, “I wanted it to have a provocative and unconventional attitude with details such as the oversized wheels that signal mobility and embossed patterns that suggest the craftsmanship behind the making. A balance between the brutal and the refined.”

The display also features a selection of tall lighting designs marked by their crimped corners, created by bending square aluminum tubing. One design even includes wheels. Other items, all crafted from aluminum, stand out for their vivid colors, including a striking red room divider, as well as a low-back chair, and a green coffee table in emerald green.

The SPECIAL EFFECTS exhibition highlights the elegance, sustainability and functionality of aluminium. “Its malleability and light colour remind me of silver. And with my background as a silversmith, I appreciate these characteristics.” On top of that, it is an ubiquitous material that can be easily recycled and allows multiple finishes. “Aluminium feels modern, new and unexplored.”
