Pamela Tan weaves colourful strings for her PROJECTION: KITE

Summer 2019 – Malaysian artist and architectural designer Pamela Tan has created an immersive environment where viewers could experience the architectural nature of a kite in a massive, exploded perspectival play. Titled PROJECTION: KITE, the installation was inspired by Tan’s architectural background and symbolized life and festivity.

The vibrant installation has been configured with modular structures as a common festive crafted object and a symbol of celebration and festivity on the occasion of the Good Vibes Festival in Gohtong Jaya in Genting Highlands, Malaysia.

Pamela Tan interpreted the festive vibe of the festival by upscaling the architecture of a kite – a symbol of freedom and festivity – and following its geometries. The design elements of PROJECTION: KITE “derive from the local technique of drawing graphical perspective with cords.” Says Pamela Tan to Archipanic.

Vibrant colourful strings from the body of the kite envelope the structure extending into the central atrium. “Weaving in and between the interstitial and arches, the strings playfully invited visitors to experience a visual portal of lightness and transparency.” Comments Tan.

Loose strings hanging from the arches and are gently moved with breeze and music, providing a dynamic installation for guests to dance and be in. “Weaving in and between the interstitial spaces and structural elements, the colorful strings playfully invited guests to experience a visual portal of lightness and transparency.” Adds the designer.

Pamela Tan is an architectural designer exploring various fields in art, architecture and design. “My work blurs the boundaries between disciplines that embody narrative and values in all form. I aim to propose speculative ideas that seek the subtle unseen and unveil the unknown delights in all scales.”
