Dubai 2017 – The Tebr collection is Aljoud Lootah‘s first foray into porcelain. The series comprises vases, a table lamp and tableware, which draw inspiration from motifs carved on an old wooden door found in Al Ain Palace, the residence of the late Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan; the former UAE President and Founder of the Nation.

The Tebr collection depicts intricate patterns that adorned the historic architecture of the United Arab Emirates and explores their interpretation into modern everyday lives. “Historically, wooden doors were a canvas for creativity, where the decorative carvings on the doors reflected the status of that household. The motifs used in ‘Tebr’ carry a strong character, reminiscent of these doors.” Says Aljoud Lootah to Archipanic.
The Tebr designs are cast in the finest quality porcelain, and the tableware is embellished with 14 karat gold that resemble the door’s massive brass nails and locks, reflecting opulence inherent in artistic creation.
Patterns related to Arabic architecture, crafts and traditions are a recurrent trend in Middle Eastern designers’ works. Aljoud Lootah installation at 2016 Dubai Design Week took inspiration from almost disappeared Emirati fishing techniques. Nisreen and Nermeen Abu-Dail’s Jordan embroidery designs reinterpret Jordan weaving techniques with designs made of corian, copper and leather thread involving women’s community within a Palestinian refugee camp.
The Tebr collection continues Emirati emerging designer Aloud Lootah journey of exploration in her country heritage. “Designers are always curious to find answers and to know the stories from their parents and grandparents which will shape the way they think and work” said Lootah to Archipanic.
