Design, Technology. Taiwan is well acknowledged for its thriving AI hardware sector. From here, Taiwan Design Week 2024 highlighted Artificial Intelligence as a technological tool and a creative catalyst. Organised by The Taiwan Design Research Institute, the festival returned to the Songshan Cultural and Creative Park in Taipei following last year’s successful debut. TDW2024 delved into the opportunities, challenges and risks of the technology that could trigger the Fifth Industrial Revolution.

At the Digital Home exhibition by SHARE LAB and MMRTeam, visitors’ subconscious inputs were AI-translated into dynamic, interactive visuals that could also be 3D-printed. The Semantic Seeker + Synthetic Storyteller installation used generative Artificial Intelligence to create images and text that predicted users‘ personalities, preferences, and lifestyles. Will interiors dream of their dwellers?
NCKU Sync Lab & Hiwin showcased a human-robot choreography. Po-Ching Chou’s Infinite Panorama used AI-generated music, pre-recording and processing these compositions to create visual soundscapes that continuously played throughout the space.
The Every Building’s OOTD showcase by Yu-Zih Wang translated patterns found in textiles into architectural plans. With the New Taipei Station: The Digital Nomad’s Playground showcase, students of Tung Hai University reimagined the city’s central station as a futuristic, ever-changing landscape.
VS AI Street Fighting invited visitors to face off against Artificial Intelligence in a creative duel crafted by Dimension Plus using text-to-image technology. The Infinite Evolution: Local Mascots exhibition examined how AI can help local traditions adapt to societal changes.
The festival also tackled significant challenges, such as concerns about the potential for AI to replace human jobs and the wider apprehensions regarding machine learning software. Project Patching: AI & Geo-cultural Bias critiqued AI’s cultural biases and proposed solutions integrating localised characteristics to ensure a more inclusive technological future.
The Taiwan Design Museum presented a curated selection of nearly 200 works that won this year’s Golden Pin Design Award and Golden Pin Concept Design Award, the country’s most influential accolades. The exhibition will be on display until April 6, 2025.
This year, TDW2024 partnered with Poland to present two exhibitions. Letters and Symbols featured posters and typography designs narrating the stories of Polish designers and their work. The Ghosts of Tomorrow showcase by Kuki Iwanski offered a powerful reflection on the future of our planet through the lens of design.
