Design. The Madrid Design Festival 2025 took over the Spanish capital with more than 200 exhibitions, events, and installations. Madrid differs from Milan, Copenhagen, and London, which pride themselves on a strong design culture and a thriving industry. Nonetheless, its vibrant and fast-growing design community is committed to putting it on the map. Now in its eighth edition, the festival, organised by La Fábrica, explores the theme of Redesigning the World. Some exhibitions run through March 15.

At Espacio Gaviota, Jorge Penadés celebrated 10 years of his career with Uproot, an exhibition showing how the discarded roots of olive trees could be upcycled into design objects. In Andalusia, olive roots and wood are generally sold as firewood despite their unique aesthetic and properties. From here, the Spanish designer worked on and nobilitated the humble material to create chairs, shelves, libraries, and stools. Uprooted was curated by Seetal Solanki of the material research design studio Ma•tt•er.
