Design. When you picture a sun umbrella, chances are a simple round canopy on a pole comes to mind—functional, familiar, and maybe a little uninspiring. But today’s design-forward parasols are anything but ordinary. From solar-powered gelato saviours to butterfly-winged beauties, the latest generation of outdoor shading solutions is rewriting the rulebook with flair, fun, and a strong sense of purpose.

Take Hulasol, for example—billed as the world’s first sun umbrella-lamp hybrid. With smooth curves inspired by the rhythm of nature, this eye-catching piece transforms any outdoor setting into a day-to-night retreat. Whether you’re hosting a garden party or simply curling up with a book, Hulasol delivers both style and function. It comes in four elegant shades—ivory, graphite, taupe, and bordeaux—and can be powered by cable or battery, the latter providing six hours of seamless ambient lighting cleverly stored in the base.
From Belgium to Italy, craftsmanship meets creativity in Mogambo by Paola Lenti. This non-collapsible parasol is more than just sun protection—it’s a sculptural centrepiece. Its hand-woven cover rests on a matte-painted aluminium and stainless-steel frame, available in refined hues from ivory to forest green. Accessories like padded seats and a clever attachable side table make it ideal for a relaxed, refined al fresco setup.
Spanish brand Gandia Blasco injects a bit of playful nostalgia with ENSOMBRA, which borrows the mechanics of a traditional hand fan. Adjustable slats open and close with ease, casting dynamic shadows that dance with the light. Designed by Odosdesign and available in vibrant colours, it’s a fresh way to animate your garden or patio with movement and mood.
For tech lovers and gelato aficionados, Portelio by Carlo Ratti Associati and Italo Rota is a standout. Designed for Sammontana, this solar-powered beach umbrella utilises foldable photovoltaic panels—much like those used on NASA spacecraft—to power fridges and misting systems beneath. A brilliant blend of sustainability and summertime delight.
Lastly, Papillon by Giulio Iacchetti for MV Line flutters onto the scene with a striking silhouette and new ergonomics. Inspired by the graceful motion of butterfly wings, it unfolds laterally and lights up your evening aperitivo with an integrated LED system. After making waves at Milan Design Week and Ostuni Design Week End, it’s clear that Papillon is more than a parasol—it’s an experience.
