From the 7th to the 9th of November the 15.3 kilometer frontier that once divided Berlin will be re-imagined in light by 8.000 glowing balloons. WHITEvoid interactive art and design studio by Christopher Bauder and filmaker Marc Bauder set a sustainable installation that will send into the air messages of freedom.
Running through the center of Berlin, from Bornholmer Straße to the Oberbaumbrücke, LICHTGRENZE (that means “Border of Light” in German) will stretch past the Mauerpark, along the Berlin Wall memorial on Bernauer Straße through to the Brandenburg Gate, over Potsdamer Platz to Checkpoint Charlie and on to the East Side Gallery.
Christopher and Marc Bauder say “Emotional strength will be given to the Lichtgrenze by thousands of balloon patrons who will attach personal messages to the balloons and then disconnect them, allowing the helium-filled orbs to streak into the Berlin night sky”.
LEDs integrated into the stands will illuminate the balloons while they take off on their journey. The natural, biodegradable material that composes them is able to hold in helium much longer than regular balloon rubber.
Christopher Bauder, light artist and owner of WHITEvoid interactive art and design, and is brother Marc Bauder , Bauder Film, conceived the idea of the LICHTGRENZE in 2011, supported by the Robert-Havemann-Gesellschaft e.V. and developed with the help of Kulturprojekte Berlin GmbH.
The LICHTGRENZE is part of the anniversary celebrations being organized by Kulturprojekte Berlin GmbH as part of an initiative from the city of Berlin. WHITEvoid is developing and producing the 8000 battery powered light elements.
