At Dubai Design Week, independent creative lab Duette unveils the Ephemeral Petunia Garden — a dreamlike installation that turns one of the city’s most fleeting winter blooms into a sustainable spectacle of light, reflection, and resilience. Reimagining the humble flower, the project transforms its short-lived beauty into a low-energy consumption, large-scale experience that glows gently rather than dazzles, proving that poetry can bloom with minimal environmental impact.

“Petunias bloom only for 90 days between November and March, often overlooked in the landscape of the city,” founders Fuad Ali and Rahat Kunakunova told Archipanic. “We transformed that fleeting beauty into a monumental experience.” Towering, softly illuminated petunia forms rise from a mirrored base, blurring the lines between the natural and urban, the real and the reflected.
By day, the installation reflects its surroundings — shimmering architecture, passing clouds, and the season’s real blossoms. By night, its petals glow delicately, creating a floating field of light that invites quiet reflection. The low-energy LEDs breathe gently, not brightly, making the installation a sustainable landmark of wonder and restraint.
Rooted in Duette’s belief in emotional, multisensory storytelling, the Ephemeral Petunia Garden explores memory, transience, and collective joy. It offers a space to celebrate the overlooked and to experience nature’s cycles reinterpreted through thoughtful design.
Duette teamed up with Blachere Illumination to craft the installation from lightweight metal stems and powder-coated mesh petals, supported by modular, mirrored panels made from sustainable wood and steel. Designed to be disassembled and reinstalled, it reduces waste while extending its life across future contexts.
In the Ephemeral Petunia Garden, beauty shines softly, reminding us that even the briefest bloom can illuminate the world — without burning it too brightly.
