Design, Crafts. There is a new generation of collectors in the craft business. What are they seeking? What trends are on the rise? We had a conversation with Isobel Dennis, the director of Collect, the premier fair highlighting contemporary craft at its finest. Presented by the UK’s Crafts Council, Collect returned to London’s Somerset House for its 21st edition with a lineup of 40 galleries featuring over 400 living artists – with many pieces created specifically for the fair.

“Contemporary craft has never been more sought after,” Dennis told Archipanic. “Younger collectors are particularly drawn to authenticity, personal narratives, and the deep artistic investment behind each piece. They value unique, one-of-a-kind works that tell a story, reflect cultural or social themes, and carry a strong sense of craftsmanship. Ethical and sustainable practices are also increasingly important, with many seeking pieces that align with their values of conscious collecting.

Indeed, contemporary craft at Collect reflected both personal artistic narratives and broader cultural movements. “This year, a key theme was the intersection of gender and heritage identity—how artists reclaim, challenge, and navigate cultural commentaries. Some celebrated heritage as a source of strength, while others engage with its complexities, sparking important conversations.”
Another standout trend was the growing prominence of wearable art. “Collect continues to be a leading platform for contemporary jewellery, elevating it as a form of artistic expression that allows collectors to connect with an artist’s vision in a deeply personal way.”
We asked Isobel Dennis for three pieces of advice for crafts lovers beginning their collecting journey.
- See and experience as much as you can – Visit fairs, museums, galleries, and exhibitions to develop your eye and understanding of contemporary craft. Engaging with different styles and materials will help refine your personal taste.
- Collect with passion, not just investment in mind – Choose pieces that truly resonate with you. A work of art in your home should bring you joy every day rather than being solely a financial consideration.
- Do your research – Learn about the artist’s background, techniques, and creative process, as well as the gallery/dealer’s reputation. Understanding the story behind a piece enhances its significance and ensures you are making informed choices.
