Design – Maison Matisse, the design brand founded by the family of Henri Matisse, has opened its first Paris flagship store in the heart of the Rive Gauche and the famous design district. “With this boutique, we aim to present our products that, given their artisanal nature, deserve to be seen in person.” The brand’s founder and president Jean-Matthieu Matisse told Archipanic.

The collections on show narrate the understated alternation of natural and artisanal wood, textile and ceramics. They emblematically reference the Maison’s production and harmonious balance between craftsmanship and the modern, distinguishing both the Maison and artist’s work.
Facing the street with two large windows, the boutique “was conceived as an apartment, an intimate, elegant place and an expression of the painter’s very essence.” As in a Henri Matisse painting, every detail emerges slowly from the space. The combination of different colours and materials generates a welcoming space with an optimistic atmosphere, able to engage the visitor in a refined and immersive experience.
Furnishings elements from the permanent collections – La Musique and Interieur aux aubergines – are in dialogue with decoration items, finding their place in spacious libraries and bringing more and more life to an environment in progress that changes as it captivates the visitor with every glance.
Two predominant elements characterize the space. In a unique and compelling aesthetic play, the warm nuances of the wood are countered by the ceramics and textile, thanks above all to the decorations adorning the walls and bureau: a powerful reference to Henri Matisse and his love for this material.
Each of the brand’s collections is inspired by the painter’s universe from Le Cateau-Cambrésis, reinterpreted by contemporary designers and produced by renowned artisans to create objects that can be held and handed down from to generation.
