On New York City High Line, Olafur Eliasson presented The collectivity project, a participatory installation of an imaginary cityscape built with over two tons of white LEGO® bricks. The Danish-Icelandic artist involved some of the most influential architecture practices like BIG, OMA, Renzo Piano Building Workshop and Steven Holl Architects to build visionary structures that could be modified and implemented by visitors as well.

On show until the end of september, The collectivity project is installed on the High Line at West 30th Street. The exhibition is presented by Friends of the High Line and High Line Art and is part of the wider exhibition program Panorama.

The collectivity project allows visitors of the High Line to play with archistars’ installations. They can build and rebuild the structures over time. Olafur Eliasson says: “As the inevitable entropy of the piece begins to soften the hard edges of the designed structures, and mounds of loose pieces gather in the corners between buildings, a beautiful collective creation takes form”.

Indeed, installed in the growing shadow of the real estate development of Hudson Yards, the mutable, human-scale artwork provides a compelling counterpoint to the concrete-and-steel towers that form the project’s backdrop.

For the first time, and uniquely to the context of the HighLine, a selection of top architectural firms have been involved to join a art project in the surrounding neighborhood where they are actually working.
