DESIGN BOX – A distinctly Australian combination of laid-back cool and casual sophistication underpins the new Refract collection by Hayden Cox for Australian furniture brand SP01. The series includes a console, side table, coffee table, and resin sculpture surfboard. With a hand feel of stone and a visual likeness to glass, the internal catalyst textures of resin allow light to shift and refract – like the sun through seawater.

“The design process was an exploration of the relationship between the material and light.” Says Hayden Cox. The stacked linear shapes that form the table bases take design cues from a wave set. The slabs glow at the tip and deepen in colour as each prism expands. Refract is a blend of delicate craftsmanship and linear minimalism, it’s the distinct materiality that plays the leading role in shape, opacity, and colour selection in the collection’s design.
Hayden Cox is a multi-disciplinary Australian designer best known for Haydenshapes, his eponymous performance surfboard company he founded at age 15. Hayden has worked on global projects with prolific New York-based artists Daniel Arsham, Alexander Wang, and KITH, along with a recent announcement of a global partnership with The Woolmark Company. Through his design ethos led by innovation, materiality exploration, and contemporary construction, beyond surfboards, Hayden has been sought out and commissioned for leading projects across Interior Design, technical consumer wearables, high-end sculpture art, and fashion.
