Design. At Design Miami Paris, within the lush gardens of the Hôtel de Maisons, Los Angeles-based James de Wulf unveiled the Resonating Ping Pong Table, Song No. 1—a game-changing piece where design meets sound and play. Each strike of the ball triggers ethereal tones, turning a simple rally into an immersive, almost meditative experience.
The tabletop is crafted from layers of matte aluminium plates, tuned to an A minor pentatonic scale. Every bounce sends soothing notes rippling outward, evoking the reverberation of church bells or the lingering hum of an organ. “I just had a light bulb moment that I should tune the surface of the table,” de Wulf explains. That spark transformed an ordinary game into a multisensory performance.
The idea first came to him at an art fair, when he noticed how the rhythmic click-clack of ping pong drew people in. “I went down a tunnel of learning about sound, and tuning, and different materials,” he says. “The aluminium just resonates so well.” The result? The Resonating Ping Pong Table – a piece where materiality meets melody in perfect harmony.

Practical yet playful, it can be used indoors or outdoors; its net can be removed for dining, and it comes with specially designed racquets and foam balls for “quiet play.” Awarded Best in Show, the table captivates both eyes and ears, turning every game into a performance.
With the Resonating Ping Pong Table, table tennis is no longer just sport – it’s interactive art. Minimalist, melodic, and full of charm, it invites players to experience design in a wholly new way.
