Design. A speaker for intimate listening, architectural columns-inspired pedestals and lamps that probe surface and light feature in the 01 ALU EDITION group exhibition by ECHO – From Residue to Form, the new design platform of Eenvoud Ontwerp studio.

ECHO pairs independent designers with industry and looks at materials that are often overlooked. Eenvoud Ontwerp founder Maaike Rabbinge told Archipanic: “The platform started from a simple question: when does something become waste and when does it become material again?”
Nedal Aluminium, a Dutch aluminium manufacturer, collaborated with Eenvoud Ontwerp, and its industrial aluminium offcuts became the show’s starting point. Within 01 ALU EDITION, “what remains returns. The same residual material is approached from different skills, techniques and perspectives.”
No shared aesthetic here: the functional, sculptural and experimental objects on display “are connected by a shared curiosity about materials and their potential. The result is a collective process bringing people together, sharing knowledge, discovering new ways of working with materials and learning from one another.”
Eenvoud Ontwerp contributes a series of stools, a bench and the CONDUIT chair and table, built from aluminium offcuts from street lighting pole production: “Their dimensions and curvature are not altered, but instead determine both form and proportion. The design emerges from the material’s existing logic, rather than being imposed onto it.”
Architectural columns and colonnades inspired Studio Jeroen van Veluw’s series of stools and pedestals, made from aluminium tubes that are joined mechanically, without welding. Repetition and visible construction set up a rhythm, turning monumental forms into light, human-scale objects.
Function, sculpture and sound meet in the work of Nemo Mulder, co-founder of Pattern Soundsystem. His contribution is VISCOUS SILENCE, an aluminium speaker “designed for intimate listening sessions, where material, sound and interaction converge.”
Studio Beek’s Bench N° 2.1 began without a plan. Aluminium profiles from Nedal’s waste stream suggested a bench, combined with solid laminated oak. Rounded edges and an exposed construction connect industrial residue with the studio’s distinctive building approach.
Atelier AW’s CO lamp series gives the lamppost’s cylinder a playful twist. Turned outward, these aluminium offcuts form a star shape that translates a lantern’s light effect into physical form, while the ribbed structure builds a system of half and full circles. Bright yellow warms the cool, industrial aluminium. Ritsert Mans, meanwhile, intertwines process, material and shape in hanging torches and sculptures.
WE ARE MAK STUDIO, by Aleksandra Sliwinska and Loran van Gerwen, shows Melt Lamp 001 and Bobber Lamp. Both are aluminium lighting pieces that probe sculptural form, surface and light, and in each the material stays visible as an essential part of the design.
Fourteen designers, one stock of aluminium offcuts, no shared style: ECHO’s first exhibition shows that material is never finished with its first life. Waste, it turns out, is only a verdict, and every verdict can be appealed by someone with a workshop.
