Design–Formerly WantedDesign Manhattan, WANTED has quickly become the destination for discovering independent American design. ArchiPanic’s founder and Editor-in-Chief, Enrico Zilli, explored the New York City furniture fair’s Look Book section and picked eight furniture and lighting designs on display.

Young Montréal-based designer Anaïe Dufresne, co-founder of the Jacques & Anna studio, presents Le Toucan, an acrylic-made table lamp with an exquisite organic flap wrapping a luminous cylindric light source. Simplicity of shapes with an organic feel.

Montréal-based studio 8888 presented the Acid Mantra collection. Inspired by a Postmodern Apocalypse, the series features dystopic pieces by Jean-Michel Gadoua, Ibiyanε, Édith Sévigny-Martel, and Verre d’Onge. “We reject contemporary priorities and unquestionably adopt the posture of discomfort. We are Brutaluxe™. We celebrate and elevate raw materials and spontaneous gestures. We are the antidote to industrial and impersonal manufacturing.”

INDO- is a Rhode Island-based furniture and lighting design studio that seamlessly blends the founders’ Indian roots with an American design ethos. The new Durbar lighting collection explores and draws influence from the cross-cultural exchanges between India and the West, particularly in architecture, jewellery, textiles, and decorative objects.

Brooklyn-based designer Steven Bukowski creates functional and expressive furniture in New York City. At WANTED 2024, he presents a bright red drawer originally designed for a Sight Unseen exhibition. His work blends traditional practices with a playful approach.

Canadian designer Lauren Goodman creates sculptural furniture using discarded objects and renewable materials. Her Fresh Catch collection was developed from derelict lobster traps salvaged off the coast of New England. The traps are carefully deconstructed and then organically rearranged and assembled into one-of-a-kind functional objects.

Vancouver-based Tav Ceramics presents Manara, a table lamp with a matte porcelain light bulb inspired by old Arab lighthouses and forts lighting collection. Manara, meaning lighthouse in Arabic, is wheel thrown and finished by hand in a variety of textures.

Inspired by Stanley Kubrick’s 2001: A Space Odyssey, Sunshine Thacker presents her Groovitational collection, comprising a series of upholstered seating furniture. The pieces, smooth and organic in form, are configured to appear like entities floating in mid-air.

With the Banksia tableware collection, Cyrc created a new design vocabulary specific to 3D printing. Inspired by tulip vases, the series features connected branching structures blending organic and industrial languages. The Absalon, Augustus, and Mariette vases are just the tip of the iceberg for a new design alphabet.
