US and Colombian firm Glasst Innovation Company created UNPAINT, the ‘world’s first peelable architectural paint.’

UNPAINT is a practical solution for renters who want to transform their new home without worrying about professional repainting when they move out. The property returns to its original state without sanding or solvents.

The innovative paint can be applied using standard tools like brushes, rollers, or sprayers. It adheres to walls as well as concrete, brick, cobblestone, fiberboards, masonry, marble, slate, granite, stone, wood, metal, laminated surfaces, glass, plastic, stucco, texturising pastes, raw wood, and even leather. 

Still, it may be difficult or inadvisable to coat damaged, wet, cracked, or moist surfaces. The company recommends conducting a sample test on the surface first to see if the paint is compatible.

The product is intended for temporary or short-term applications. Thanks to a ‘biodegradable, elastic component,’ once applied, it dries to a film-like layer that can last up to 10 months before being peeled off or naturally decomposing without damaging the surface underneath.

UNPAINT is a 90% biodegradable product with a negative carbon footprint. Indeed, it removes more CO2 from the environment than it emits during its entire lifecycle. To be precise, 11kg of CO2 emission for each kg produced and used.

The innovative paint was serendipitously discovered during the development of Glasstommer®, an innovative and sustainable technology for protective coatings which allows the paint to leave almost no traces when users peel off the removable paint from surfaces.
