Ingo Maurer’s magical LED ‘flames’

Moritz Waldemeyer’s Flame collection for Ingo Maurer uses LED technology to recreate the ancient, simple yet infinitely complex allure of a candle flame. A bare circuit board featuring the latest in micro-processor technology paired with 256 high quality LEDs per candle is all it takes to evoke the natural flow and flicker. When seen from a short distance,  the light is indistinguishable from the real thing. Closer inspection reveals the low resolution charm of the digital display.

Japanese designer Kazuhiro Yamanaka needed only an A4 paper sheet and a small coin battery LED to create a flickering candle! The design switches ON by merely rolling the sheet in the shape of a candle stick. The simplicity of the design means that any kind of paper can be used.


Cells-inspired candle holders by Zaha Hadid Design

Zaha Hadid Design’s Cell stainless steel candle holders were inspired by the biological process of cell growth. Amorphously shaped bases resemble cell nuclei, balanced on long and narrow stems. The range comprises also a stainless steel centrepiece true to Hadid’s process: the complex perforations remain undistorted and precise with the use of laser technology.

You don’t need cables nor batteries to diffuse music in the room with Pelty, the wireless speaker that works with the humble power of a candle flame. Made in glass and ceramic, Pelty combines blue-tooth technology with the Peltier Effect, a thermoelectric discovery by XIX century French physician Jean Charles Athanase Peltier. The heat of a candle at the base of the device generates the power needed to activate the speaker.

Tom Dixon expands his SWRIL range with the Candelabra collection of  candle holders, vases and bookends made from a newly developed mysterious material that resembles three-dimensional marbled paper. The unique process involves recycling the powdered residue from the marble industry, mixed with pigment and resin to create blocks of material that can then be sawn, sliced and turned on a lathe. Substantial in weight, smooth in texture and bold in pattern, Swirl is set to inject an unexpected fresh pop sensibility.
