Design – “The Salone has always been a catalyst for creativity, positivity and energy.” Said the fair’s president Maria Porro at the press conference of Salone del Mobile.Milano 2022. “We cannot stand still; in fact, we have a duty to move even faster in the direction of design, production and distribution solutions that are as sustainable as possible – what we need today is an ethical approach to design.”

Salone del Mobile.Milano 2022 will focus on sustainability. Indeed, the fair laid out guidelines to help exhibitors and stand designers and builders respect basic sustainability criteria. So far, such guidelines are recommendations, but the president committed to turning them into rules. They range from employing reusable or upcycled certified materials to employing environmentally safe products and equipment as well as endeavouring not to waste materials, electricity or water.

For Salone’s 60th birthday, Mario Cucinella will create the Design with Nature installation, 1.400 sqm, narrating a virtuous ecosystem that will ideally represent the future of home living [at the Pavilion 15, S.Project]. The Italian architect reflects that while the events of the last few years have made us rediscover the importance of sociality and sharing. We still need to find a balance with what is around us, with the spaces we inhabit and the territories we occupy – home, city, or planet – and with the resources available to us.

SaloneSatellite will put its bets on the new generations that have grown up in a time of crisis and who aspire to more equitable and responsible production and usage. 600 under-35 designers from 58 countries will showcase their projects at the entrance of the fair.

Buyers and exhibitors from China – under lockdowns – and Russia – hit by sanctions and travel bans due to the Ukrainian war – won’t be in Milan. The countries are very important markets for the design industry both in Italy and globally. That’s why we “must work even harder to open alterative paths and markets like Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates,” says Porro. Organisers also confirm that no exhibitors from Ukraine will join the fair so far. “We have always been a place of dialogue and construction. Now, we are as shocked as everyone else by the war in Ukraine and believe even more in the importance of being a crossroads of cultures and styles open to the world.” Says Porro.

Which will be the impact of the war on the event? “We can’t estimate it yet. However, it should be limited as international business travelers have a direct interest and won’t refrain to come over as much as tourists”.

The Salone Internazionale del Mobile, the International Furnishing Accessories Exhibition and Workplace3.0 will offer a great many aesthetic avenues, in which the protagonists are products of quality and research. The June event will also feature the biennial exhibitions EuroCucina, and its collateral event FTK – Technology For the Kitchen – and the International Bathroom Exhibition.

Making a return after its debut in 2019, S.Project, the exhibition devoted to design products and large-scale project solutions, will highlight the most significant lines of research into surface and solutions that will allow the design of individual pieces to be transferred to that of whole environments.
