Burning Man 2018 – BIG architects aim to install a mirrored gigantic orb which will “will be visible from most of The Playa, and will help Burners navigate the desert and find way”. Scaled to 1/500,000th of the earth’s surface and with a diameter of nearly 100 feet, the structure has been launched on crowdfunding online platform Indiegogo with the aim to raise $50,000 over the next two months.
The ORB finds itself at the axis of the Art & Utility, capturing the entire Black Rock City in an airborne temporal monument. The structure’s inflated mirror sphere is supported by a 32m long inclined steel mast firmly anchored to the ground with strong foundations and a a large baseplate. Its honest and clear expression hides a lot of complexity and effort.
At night, the ORB will blend entirely into its surroundings and become part of the desert. The ORB is a tribute to mother earth & human expression – designed to easily inflate and deflate, leaving no trace on the Playa.
“We have funded the majority of 30 ton of steel and 1000 hours of welding of the structure as well as 1500 sewing hours for the 2000 m2 / 21,500 sq ft sphere ourselves. To complete the funding, we are looking to raise 50.000 S$ from friends, family and anyone who would like to bring this art piece to Burning Man 2018 – your donation will bring a temporal planet to the Playa!”
Burning Man 2018 takes place August 26 – September 3, 2018 in the Black Rock Desert of Nevada. Participants join in the effort to co-create Black Rock City, a temporary metropolis dedicated to art and community. This year’s theme I, Robot, takes inspiration from Isaac Asimov’s iconic sci-fi novel to explore our love-hate relationship with new technologies through visionary art and architecture.
