Design—Italian designer Mara Bragagnolo presents Nook, an inclusive furniture collection for all children, including those on the autistic spectrum. “Instead of having them adapt to predetermined spaces, I wanted them to allow them to feel free.” Bragagnolo told Archipanic.

The collection comprises a library, a sofa, a wheelchair, a divider, a desk, and a quiet box. It is presented at the SuperDesign Show [Via Tortona 27, Map] and the public library in the Porta Venezia Design District [Via Paolo Frisi 2/4, Map] until April 21.

Nook is inspired by the Montessori method, which involves children’s natural interests and activities rather than formal teaching methods. “It was designed to fit organically in any classroom or playground, responding to autistic kids’ necessities while avoiding any issues. Each piece was carefully designed to best adapt to their interests and preferred ways to interact with others.”

The Nook Library features a niche for isolated reading. A strategically positioned small window provides a connection with the external space as well as privacy.

The Hug sofa is inspired by Temple Grandin’s Hug Box, a therapeutic device designed to calm hypersensitive people. It offers a personal space that creates a warm hug through different cushion configurations. Being squeezed into the soft embrace creates a calming pressure that allows kids to concentrate.

The Rocking Wheelchair blends wheelchairs and rocking horses to create equality between disabled and non-disabled kids. The rocking feature is actually very effective in increasing reading concentration through vestibular stimulation.

Everyone Desk is a multitasking piece of furniture for kids of different ages. It doubles as a bookshelf, a bookcase, or a desk for children aged 3 to 6 and a table/chair for toddlers. The dividing panel allows children to concentrate and read, creating a safe, private space.

Designed for a sound-proof space, the Hideaway Quiet Box [First picture] allows intimacy. Inside, soft and sound-absorbing materials create a pleasing environment. The box works as a shelf and bookcase.

Light Screen shelters from direct light. Small windows allow children to sneak a peek while preserving their privacy. It can also be used to create interstitial rooms between the public and the private, allowing kids to get ready to enter a new environment.
