Design – Dubai-based architect Ahmed El-Sharabassy has designed Nature in Motion, Dubai Design Week 2021 ABWAB pavilion, inspired by the UAE Desert and its evolution towards a city in constant progress and development. The responsible architecture highlights the need to build cities that evolve and dialogue with their surrounding Nature.

The pavilion mimics the natural occurrence of a sand wave rolling over the ground, inspired by Nature’s motion and emphasizing “how sustainability and durability occur when we move along with it, not against it,” explains Ahmed El-Sharabassy to Archipanic. Built of sustainable and recyclable materials such as bamboo and sustainable fabric, the lightweight structure and the volatility of the pavilion design allowed the space to act as a multi-functional and multi-purpose public space that simultaneously sheltered the visitors.
“Nature in Motion drew ideas from the local environment and the geographical context of the city, calling nature back to the urbanized and developed areas while creating a harmonious and mutually respectful dialogue between nature and the city.”
Nature in motion hosts the Pulp Fusion exhibition curated by Beirut-based architecture and research firm Bits to Atoms which focuses on the human impact on the planet and the role of design as a restorative tool while embedding Nature as a core element.
As a result of Bits to Atoms’ ongoing long-term research project, Pulp Fusion explores compostable seed carrier structures inspired by pigeon houses found all over the Middle East and cast in recycled paper. Visitors can discover compostable building materials and structures, the use of colors found in natural sources of pigmentation, studies on structure and resistance based on rigorous research and testing on the thorough understanding of paper as a construction material.
Abwab – which means ‘door’ in Arabic – is Dubai Design Week’s platform dedicated to commissioning work from across the Middle East, North Africa and South Asia to promote the region’s talent and stimulate cultural exchange.
