For his graduation project at Bauhaus University in Weimar, Weng Xinyu developed the Good medicine tastes bitter design project that features moody furniture that misbehave devilering designers’ ideas. Xinyu has team with Tao Haiyue and founded Yuue design studio that is based in Berlin.
Weng Xinyu comments: “Good medicine tastes bitter said Confucius. Although its taste is not so pleasant, at least it cures the disease. What’s more, it keep us awake. I tried to create a series of products that are not so useful but have good intentioned messages inside, as to explore the purpose and future of product design”.
The pettish and needy Angry Lamp switches itself off when left alone in the room or when it is in competition with another light source.
Angry Lamp isn’t just prickly: indeed, it keeps an eye on how people use energy and it is always ready to turn itself off if the user forgets about it.
Tangible Memory is an interpretation of time and memory. If it’s left alone for a long time, the photo blurs just like a memory and fades away.
But if the user touches the photo frame, the glass slowly becomes clear and the picture reveals itself again.

Time Killer is a suicidal (and cheeky) wall clock that secretly attempts to saw its face off as soon as everybody leaves it alone. Whenever someone walks back in the room, the saw halts.
“As the blade sinks deeper and deeper with time, the passage of time now becomes a vivid scenario which lead us to endless contemplation” Says Weng Xinyu.
Shadow Play is a lamp that turns its light and shadow into a fascinating shadow puppet theater. Once turned on, the light projects orchid leaves on the screen. The leaves wake up, stretch out and swings quitely in a random manner. The poetic dynamic interplay between light and shadow through time enhances the perception of the world through a daily object.
