Design—The ‘Making Sense of Color’ installation by research lab Chromasonic and Google Design Studio explores the power of colours through all senses. At the core of the exhibition, “light becomes audible and sound visible,” explains Chromasonic co-founder Johannes Girardoni.

Semi-translucent panels compose 21 open-box rooms, each illuminated by a single LED square from above. Shifting hues tune with the rhythm of sound frequencies, equivalent to the real wavelengths of the various shades. Red is for the lower ones, blue and yellow are for the higher ones, and so on.

Through Chromasonic Refrequencing, a synesthetic innovation translating sound frequencies to light and light frequencies to sound, “light is made audible and sound visible.” Explains Johannes Girardoni. “This unique phenomenon gives rise to a depth of immersion that makes each person acutely aware of the connection between their body’s subtle movements and the movement of other people within the installation.”

From there, ‘Making Sense of Color’ shifts from the ethereal to the material as guests move onto a series of spaces, each dedicated to a particular colour inspired and informed by a specific sensation. What do colours feel like? What do they look like? What do they smell like? And what do they taste like?

Step by step, sense by sense, the journey culminates in a feast for the eyes that shows how colour comes to life through the design of Google’s hardware portfolio. Look up to a sky with clouds or flocks of birds passing by. Discover how pink can smell like the blooming season and taste the true ‘lemon-ness’ of yellow.
