Furniture – “The goal was to create things that are practical and useful without sacrificing beauty and sleekness.” Says to Archipanic Duyi Han who creates digitally rendered scenes with his studio Doesn’t Come Out. Developed for Thomas Musca’s brand Cassius Castings, all the pieces of the lightweight beton brut collection are two-dimensional extrusions of glass-fiber-reinforced concrete – GFRC – getting their strength from rigid framed trusses.

All furniture come with a morphed geometry of planes and voids. The collection comprises Rocker, a pointed Brutalist rocking chair, and its smaller sister Rockito, the family is complete with Side Table and Coffee Table. The Kink chair comes with two geometric voids whilst the beton brut Chaise lounge is composed of flat ‘almost’ interlacing planes.
“We wanted to explore how far he could take that material, how long he could extend an expanse without using rebar, how thin he could build the walls without sacrificing strength, how extreme he could engineer a cantilever without it tipping over, how delicate he could make an inherently clunky substance.”
By teaming their skills the designers drew, rendered and cast weatherproof monolithic designs which were inspired by 1950s British Brutalism and work equally well in residential, commercial, and public spaces. Some of the works are set in digitally rendered scenery created by Duyi Han.
“Whenever we build a concrete mold, there are several small rectangles of basswood left over, about postcard size. Instead of throwing them out, Thomas likes to sketch on them, that way there’s no waste”. Adds Duyi Han.
“Then we iterate and refine on the computer, playing with angles, size, and proportions, using Rhino, seeing what works, what doesn’t. After we come up with something we love that’s structurally sound, we build the molds, then hand mix, cast, and pour them in GFRC.”
