Playful – JJ Studio engaged with teachers to design a desaturated kindergarten for a Montessori pre-school in Taiwan. “Pre-schools generally have colorful amusement equipment and standard classrooms. But is this the real needs of children?”
Probably, not necessarily. JJ Studio decided to avoid the usual bold hues that generally define and end to frame kids-only environments. The Taiwanese-based studio designed a desaturated space conceived as a blank canvas where kids can feel free to build their own adventures. Because “the world of children is simple, and anything can be a playground at any time”.

“The client’s hope was to integrate into the Montessori education program and philosophy which envisiones a space where children can learn independently;” say JJstudio to Archipanic. The project uses this concept to extend development. “We decided to overturns preconceptions about stereotype for kindergarten. Let the children feel the beauty of the environment not from the textbooks, but in the school where they daily live”.
The desaturated kindergarten project takes the form of soft rubber floors, which makes children to act confidently and explore. The large floor-to-ceiling windows have good lighting, while the play area surrounds the window. “We hope kids can feel the changes of the seasons while watching the street scene”.
JJ Studio retained the height of the ceiling to create a sense of spaciousness and let the children to have the most free development. Wood walls surround the play area which leads to the kitchen as well while the resting room and toilets are all housed to one side.
“This layout allows the kindergarten to act as a large space, where children of different ages can amuse with each other,” add at JJ Studio “Here kids can promote their imagination and learn independently.
