Architecture. Tucked into Dubai’s first-ever forest living community, the Ghaf Woods Experience Centre by Beijing-based studio aoe is more than just a building—it’s a gateway into a new way of living with nature. Inspired by the organic flow of desert sand dunes, the centre blends sustainability, storytelling, and immersive design to give visitors a glimpse of the future of biophilic living.

Just a stone’s throw from the bustling Global Village, the centre acts as a calm threshold into Ghaf Woods. The Experience Centre’s sculptural form rises like a dune emerging from the ground, guiding guests into a series of curated experiences. As aoe explains, the building “is a working prototype for climate-adaptive architecture in the region,” developed in collaboration with Dubai-based STUDIOI.

The journey begins with a luminous Light Tunnel that plays with shadow and reflection, followed by displays of building materials and a VR suite where future homes and landscapes spring vividly to life. Outdoors, a network of landscaped “nodes” offers spaces to pause and connect—whether at the amphitheatre, the event plaza, or the meditative garden of water.

Architecturally, the building feels rooted in its environment. Its GRC-stepped exterior echoes the soft ridges of dunes, while the southern glass façade opens fully to the pond and forest canopy, creating a fluid dialogue between inside and out. Inside, precision and imagination come together: a detailed 3D model showcases the masterplan, while material samples highlight the conscious choices behind Ghaf Woods’ sustainable design.

Climate responsiveness is baked into the architecture. Extended eaves minimise solar gain, water features provide natural cooling, and the surrounding forest ecosystem—planted with native and adaptive species—creates a cooler microclimate than the desert beyond.

Beyond technology and performance, the centre is designed for people. On the quieter northern side, a VIP lounge and offices open onto a private courtyard, offering comfort and privacy for staff and guests alike. The open-plan interiors are also deliberately flexible, ready to evolve into cultural venues, learning spaces, or community hubs as Ghaf Woods grows.

In many ways, the Experience Centre is a manifesto for the future of urban living in the Middle East. It combines architectural vision with ecological sensitivity, showing how design can foster wellbeing, resilience, and a deeper bond with nature. With its dune-like curves and forest setting, it sets the stage for a lifestyle where city living and natural harmony go hand in hand.
