Interior Design–Bangkok-based studio TOUCH Architect has created the French Kitsch III café with an eclectic and tongue-in-cheek attitude. Arched concrete volumes house an exquisite interior design dotted with decorative pink bulldogs.

“The rhythmic arcades of Parisian cathedrals were a primary reference to the project.” TOUCH Architect’s co-founder and art director Parpis Leelaniramol told Archipanic. But instead of symmetrical vaults, imperfect arches of different scales define the building’s volume. “The design started from a perfect rectangular mass, rendered imperfect by carving out imperfect arches on the first level and inverted imperfect arches on the second level.”

On the first floor, the studio used the shape of a croissant to create a striking interior design featuring a number of arches with slightly uneven shapes. When light passes through the window, it creates reflections on the floor, similar to those of cathedral glass.

The oversized, imperfect arch also creates a continuous space from the long ground-floor counter to the upper level, highlighting the full-function counter and allowing it to be seen from a distance. On the second floor, voids have been carved into the inverted curves, allowing sunlight to enter while acting as a shading device.

The project’s key concept is Kitsch, a form of art that appreciates imperfection. The studio used textured concrete as the main material to strengthen the contrast/dialogue between perfection and imperfection. The non-completely smooth walls reflect the authenticity of the material, while green areas are integrated inside the architecture, contrasting with the grey concrete.

Furniture, decorations, and LED lights emphasise the imperfect arch curves within the tunnel space. Throughout the cafe, TOUCH Architect also placed decorative pink bulldogs, the symbol for the French Kitsch brand.
