Design, Technology. At CES – Consumer Electronic Show, Swiss startup E-Outdoor unveiled E-SKIMO, a breakthrough innovation “designed to make ski mountaineering accessible to everyone while preserving the thrill of the downhill experience.”

E-SKIMO combines advanced engineering with a user-friendly design. It features a power unit, a removable 10-Nm gearless hub motor with a 240-Wh lithium battery, and a splittable snowmobile-style tread installed on each ski to assist during uphill ascents.

These components work together to reduce effort by 30% and increase ascent speeds by up to 80%, offering up to three hours of runtime on a single charge.

Advanced sensors, including an IMU – Inertial Measurement Unit and GPS, detect each ski’s position and heel weight/angle. This allows the device to offer natural assistance, like riding an e-bike. Weighing only 2.8 kg per pair, the skis remain manoeuvrable during climbs.

At the summit, the power unit, battery, and tread detach easily for storage in a backpack. The system features sensors on the poles that automatically disengage assistance when one pole is released, ensuring control and safety.

The idea of a propulsion system for skiers uphill dates back to 1964. However, due to development challenges, these ideas never reached the market. Over the past five years, the brand has designed, tested, and refined the technology with various skier profiles. The innovation was developed in collaboration with the Ski Excellence Center of Mittersill at Tecnica Group, ensuring top-tier expertise and validation.

E-SKIMO will integrate with top ski brands, similar to how e-bike power units integrate with bicycles. To bring this innovation to the slopes, E-Outdoor is partnering with major ski manufacturers that have already expressed strong interest in it.
