“Of course, we must get set for the challenges we’re facing, but we must also get our setting right, forge smart coalitions and work together.” Explains Dutch Design Week 2022 curator Miriam van der Lubbe. “We have to act now. The only mistake we can make is just not to get started. So get set!”
RetroFuture
Noord Brabantlaan 1A [Map], 10:00 – 18:00.
How we imagined the future in the past could be the key to understanding what we should be doing in the future. Next Nature presents RetroFuture, an exhibition in the sci-fi Evoluon building by Leo de Bever and Louis Christiaan Kalff (1966). Here, visitors can plunge into a playful world of design, art, science, and film through the perception of future thinkers, dreamers, and designers. Instead of providing iconic Dutch fast-food snacks, Emma van der Leest’s microbial snack machine dispenses products made from algae and enzymes. Visit a haunted house and encounter a collage of frightening things you hope will remain a nightmare.
The Solar Pavilion
Ketelhuisplein [Map] 11:00 and 18:00.
V8 Architects and Marjan van Aubel designed The Solar Pavilion as an energetic meeting place where visitors can experience the poetic power of the sun. Like a ‘solar cloth,’ the installation harvests solar energy, which is then used to spread our star’s heat in the dark space underneath using infrared radiation.
Lidewij Edelkoort at the Van Abbemuseum
Kazerne, Paradijslaan 2 [Map] 12.00-20.00.
The enrichment of the Van Abbemuseum collection with more than 50 works from the Lidewj Edelkoort’s collection culminates in this double exhibition at Van Abbemuseum and Home of Design Kazerne. Human, instinctive, a coalition, collective, and so on. Again and again, we can define what a collection is.
DAE Grad Show 2022
Microtuin, Hurksestraat 19 [Map] 11.00-18.00.
In the Microrotuin former telecommunications centre, Design Academy Eindhoven presents more than 200 Bachelor and Masters projects by graduates responding to a world threatened by environmental crises, accelerated by digitisation, and rewritten through new understandings of history. DAE Grad Show is one of the world’s most influential exhibitions of work by new designers.
No Space For Waste – Isola Design @ DDW 2022
Bleekweg 1M [Map] – 11.00-18.00.
Milanese platform Isola Design returns to Eindhoven for the fourth time with several exhibitions showcasing solutions and proposals for a more responsible future. The No Space For Waste exhibition presents functional pieces made with waste materials and discarded products, aiming to minimize the environmental impact. Participating designers embrace sustainable production processes that can no longer be supported.
Low-Resolution
Gabriël Metsulaan 1 [Map] 11.00-18.00, Thu 27 and Sun 30 11.00-17.00.
We live in the high-resolution digital hype. With the Low-Resolution exhibition, Kiki&Jost deliberately appoint the physical experience of design to create as a source of exploration and inspiration before tech. At the centre of the show is a large table the design duo created in collaboration with Very Simple Kitchen focusing on the humanist value of design and the inclusive experience of eating together. Joost van Bleiswijk Kiki van Eijk presents pieces in steel, using bold shapes of solid presence, and ceramic and textile works exploring historic crafts of tufting. Other designers explore the low-resolution approach to production as a core value that is beneficial to sync up with reality.
GRRAGE by Studio Martens & Visser
FF88+3j, De Greefstraat 6 [Map] – 10.00-18.00.
Studio Martens & Visser opens the doors of their new studio GRRAGE showcasing new objects of wonder, playful interior pieces, and installations inspired by Nature and the beauty of physics. “We developed almost 1,000 square meters into a creative laboratory, communal workshop, and vibrant studio spaces where designers, architects, researchers, artists, and video makers teamwork.”
