The Whisky Organ concert – Bompas and Parr combined a magnificent church organ with a contemporary sound and a video mapping light-show to help whisky lovers to appreciate the complex flavours of Johnnie Walker® Blue Label™.
The organ – a.k.a. The Flavour Conductor – brought to life a vision only previously articulated in literature. Originally described in A Rebours, the 19th Century decadent novel by J. K. Huysmans, through to Aldous Huxley’s Brave New World, novelists and scientists have dreamed of an instrument where notes and melodies correspond with smells, tastes and flavours.
Harry Parr, said, “Developing The Flavour Conductor has been an epic undertaking, combining several centuries worth of technology, literature and science. It’s been hugely exciting to bring talents of multiple disciplines of craftsmen and artists together”.
Bompas and Parr exploited the latest flavour science to come out of Oxford University’s Crossmodal Research Laboratory to inform the creation of bespoke musical composition, visual effects and the commission of Mander Organs one of the Britain oldest church organ specialists.
Bompas and Parr are experts in flavour-based experience design, culinary research, architectural installations and contemporary food design. Founded by Sam Bompas and Harry Parr the studio has since gone on to create immersive flavour-based experiences ranging from an inhabitable cloud of gin and tonic, a chocolate climbing wall and a Taste Experience for the Guinness Storehouse in Dublin.
