Makethatstudio and Improntabarre created Pètra, a pebble-looking jug that blends the geography and cultural influences of Sicily by reinterpreting an ancient container imported during the Moorish domination over 3.000 years ago.
Makethatstudio and Improntabarre analyzed the morphology and geology of the bed of Simeto river in Sicily. Pètra soft shape was then modeled from a selected single stone featuring the most functional size and ergonomics required by the jug’s ancient design.
Simeto river flows through Sicily along many remains of the Moorish domination (872 – 1.091 A.D.) that influenced the local culture and craftmanship.

Indeed, the project started from the Bummulo Malandrino, a local jug for fine liquids that belongs to the history of Arab ceramics. The so-called “tricky amphora” was characterized by the filling from the bottom to protect the contents from external agents.

Make That Studio say “Today the Bummulo Malandrino jug is crafted and sold as a souvenir in Caltagirone. We wanted to give it a new life and look by designing a contemporary tableware that well represents the history of Sicily, characterized by countless cultural influences”.
Pètra is available in numbered pieces, different colors and finishings. “We wanted to bring back the idea of the preciousness of fresh drinking water” said the designers.
The jugs are crafted by Improntabarre by the Branciforti ceramic atelier in Caltagirone. Here the machines and the heat of stoves blend with the techniques of makers and Sicily craftmanship.
Pètra has been presented at L’Ariete contemporary art gallery during the first edition of Bologna Design Week 2015, an event aimed to map the italian creative community.
Make that Studio was founded in 2013 by Dea Sgarbossa and Nicola Russo. The italian duo with a passion for architecture works across visual arts and design, such as art direction, graphic design, product design and styling. Dea and Nicola continue also their own personal design research between the Mediterranean area and South-East Asia.
