Milan 2019BIG, Bjarke Ingels Group has designed LA LINEA, a flexible tube of light, capable to freely twist and turn in space according to undefined geometries. Developed for Italian lighting design company Artemide, the design easily fits into indoor and outdoor spaces, interior design and architectural projects.

The design tunes with the growing trend in lighting design which goes beyond the concept of lamp or chandelier to envision light as a modular, flexible and graphic element that integrates into the space by bending, stretching and contouring.

The flexibility enables us to move and interact with the environment in new and unpredicatable ways. The possiblities are endless!” Says Bjarke Ingels. “LA LINEA is a basic principle that generates an open system which can requalify common spaces, create social and engaging landscapes, and promote relations between people and their surroundings.” Explain at Artemide.

An individual element is a 2,5 or 5 metres long silicon flexible tube with a 50 mm diameter that can be extended by means of joints concealed inside its profile, without visible shadows or signs. The design generates comfortable and high-efficiency diffused light through its patented optical unit.

Through its mechanical and structural characteristics, it can easily adjust to extreme climatic conditions and resist to weather agents and temperatures ranging from -20C° to +40C°. “La Linea turns light into an ideal fixture for outdoor spaces, architectures, parks, or public and urban areas”.

It can disappear by adhering to the architecture or become highly expressive by folding three-dimensionally in space and designing soft or linear graphic elements that set the pace of the surrounding environment.

A clear example of the design’s endless applications can be seen in BIG’s project for the Superkilen park in Copenhagen which features a river of light flowing and defining the space. For the Musée Atelier Audemars Piguet, Bjarke Ingels Group used La Linea to contour the building spiraling roof and enhance architectural dynamism.

The light emission can be controlled by means of the Artemide app, the innovative and user-friendly light management system developed for all our LED products. The flexible design can be folded to minimize the packaging bulk as well.
