Mexico – Eduardo Neira of studio Roth completed the AZULIK Uh May, an in-wonderland art centre plunged into the Mexican jungle. Located in Francisco Uh May in heart of the Yucatan peninsula, the multi-faceted complex is due to open at the end of November featuring an art space, a creative fashion and design school bringing together artists in residence with local Mayan population.
Polished cement surfaces undulate from floor to ceiling while raw Bejuco wooden floors – a vine-like plant native to the region. These anthropomorphous structures have timber canopy-like roofs and appear to naturally grow from the ground, with various rooms connected by floating bridges and meandering paths snaking through the trees.
At its centre, 16-meter-high concrete and bejuco dome is topped with a cupola crowned by the flower of life – a geometrical shape composed of overlapping circles arranged in a flower like pattern. “The environmentally conscious architecture of AZULIK Uh May is a refreshing and imaginative combination of from locally sourced materials. All the spaces are built to ensure they leave no carbon footprint.” Explain Eduardo Neira.
The multi-faceted and flexible complex will encompass an array of creative spaces, including an innovative art space, a lab dedicated to fashion and design, a state of the art recording studio as well as residencies for artists. At the heart of the centre, a school focusing on the universal language of art and craft will bring together the local Mayan population, artists in residence, international students and scholars.
“AZULIK uh may will encourage and favor the encounter of the finest spirits of our times committed to exploring new forms of reconnecting as individuals and as a community alike, united by the shared desire to learn from the native tribes to live in harmony with the environment and to help them navigate the challenges of contemporary life under the aegis of art in a myriad of manifestations.”
AZULIK Uh May is the latest project of Eduardo Neira who is also the founder and designer of the AZULIK luxury resort and the adjacent art space IK LAB.
