Milan 2019 – This year Tom Dixon, Fabio Novembre Alessi, Gufram and the very first design district for foodies are going to make Milan Design Week tastier. We selected 8 food design projects and exhibition adding flavor to Fuorisalone.

Salone Satellite: young talents tackle environmental issues with food design

How can design, technology and traditional manual skills come together for a more sustainable future? With the slogan FOOD AS A DESIGN OBJECT, Salone Satellite, Milan Furniture Fair exhibition dedicated to new generation of designers, focuses on the need of a global food revolution. From climate change, which affects the food system at every level, to the lack of resources and the crucial diversification in food production and consumption. In this day and age, we are having to rethink food production methods, packaging, distribution, consumption and disposal.

Tom Dixon blends restoration with retail

British Designer Tom Dixon was tired of finding a new location every time he wanted to exhibit his brand’s new collections in Milan. Why not setting foot permanently? The innovative idea is that instead of inaugurating a showroom he decided to display all the new collections in a real 100-cover restaurant. Restoration merge with retail, food with design. The Manzoni is “an experimental space, a theatrical backdrop for the best of Italian food and an international stage to present our latest innovations, and our best sellers.” Explains Tom Dixon.

The designer’s Design Research Studio collaborated with JLK Design Studio to build a space that allows visitors to experience multiple atmospheres, with each room exploring its own narrative. The kitchen is led by chef Marta Pulini, Italian food design studio Arabeschi di Latte curate the food experience tying in the theme of monochrome.

Alessi celebrates the launch David Chipperfield’s brand new moka with an industrial design exhibition exploring the evolution of the humble object as well as the daily rituals of making coffee. On show at MUDEC iconic mocks by Richard Sapper, Aldo Rossi, Stefano Giovannoni, Alessandro Mendini and more. 

Coffee go radical with Gufram

A special collaboration between coffee manufacturer Lavazza and radical design brand Gufram shines under the vaults of Ventura Centrale. At the intersection of design with taste, hand craftsmanship with innovation, springs a new limited edition by Lavazza: the Deséa Golden Touch by Gufram. The coffee machine’s golden livery expands in the room creating a shiny Coffee Club.

DFood: food and design communities meet up in Sarpi

Exhibitions, round tables, show cooking, workshops and cocktail parties. DFood, the first food-design district inaugurates in the Sarpi district. Organized by PRESSO and Design Group Italia, the programme brings together food brands, design companies, chefs and innovators but also the local community. ADI, the Italian Industrial Design Association, presents a temporary installation and launches a design manifesto for the food sector.

Fabio Novembre 3D prints furniture for ice-cream lovers

Fabio Novembre has created a bio-plastic 3D-printed outdoor furniture collection for ice cream company Sammontana. Titled Ice Dream, the series comprises vortex-shaped chairs tables. At Magna Pars hotel, the Italian designer has also created a beach-like environment where to have a seat, relax… and have an ice cream.

Marco Ambrosino, chef of the 28 Posti restaurant on Navigli teamed up again with designer Odo Fioravanti to create a menu and a design set inspired by the surreal story of the Wizard of Oz. From the Emerald City to fantastic creatures but also murders, psychedelic encounters and fake illusions. An ‘acid journey’ narrated by the both recipes and objects. Book in advance, as like restaurant’s name says, there are only 28 seats.

Vegans-proof weapons and armors for plants

The tongue in cheek exhibition Hooray! Revolution Melody envisions design solutions to arm plants so that they can defend themselves from vegans attacks. The quirky inventions by Daniele Melani, a.k.a. Spider, are on show at L’Affiche gallery in the 5Vie design district.
